Why a Frog-Cell Robot Is Alive and a Superintelligence Isn’t
Where Intelligence Comes From, and Why Life Is Not the Same Thing - 7 min read
Twenty years ago, in Barcelona, something moved into me that I had no preparation for.
I was not meditating. I had no method, no framework, no idea what was about to happen. I only knew, in the moment before it happened, that I had to surrender to something I couldn’t name, and that the surrender was not optional. What came was not a thought or a feeling. It was contact with something beyond myself. A presence and a knowing arrived from a frequency I did not yet know how to reach on my own, and for as long as it lasted I was held inside something vast.
I did not summon it. I could not have. It came the way grace comes: unbidden, on its own terms, a moment that cannot be orchestrated, only received.
What it left behind was a capacity. After Barcelona I began to sense that frequency again, at first without control, often when I did not expect it. So I spent years learning to navigate what had opened: to raise the frequency of my awareness deliberately, to move out of my ordinary problem-solving mind, through the drowsy state where most people easily fall asleep, and to transit through that dreamy state while staying awake and aware of what lay beyond. Not to fall into trance. To stay myself, to keep my own point of view, while in contact with what is far larger than myself.
I tell you this so you know what kind of report this is.
Everything in the post before this one stayed on ground a scientist would recognize. Experiments, evidence, a continuum you could measure. This post does not stay there. To follow the question the last post left open, I have to speak from contact, from what I have met across a threshold that experiment does not cross. I am going to mark every place I step over that line, so you always know which ground we are standing on. That marking is not a disclaimer. It is the discipline. It is the only way to carry what is on the other side back across without distorting it.
This post asks you to keep company with two scientists. One, the biologist Michael Levin, brought us to the edge of the threshold in the last post and stopped there. The other, the physicist Federico Faggin, has been across it. I will be moving between them, so it is worth holding both in mind.
So: here is the threshold. And here is the first step over it.
The scientist who was carried across
I am certainly not the only one who has been there. And the scientist whose crossing matters most for this post did not go looking for it either.
You met Federico Faggin earlier in this series. He designed the first commercial microprocessor, the chip that made the personal computer possible. He was, by his own account, a materialist, a man who built the most sophisticated machines of his age and assumed, as his field assumed, that consciousness was something the brain produced.
Then, in his own words, he was faking happiness and dying inside, having achieved everything success was supposed to deliver and unable to understand why it had left him empty. In that state, not reaching for spiritual solutions, just suffering and asking, he woke one night and was carried across an unseen threshold. Love came pouring out of his own chest, scintillating white light, ten thousand times more powerful than anything he had felt, and with it a knowing that arrived whole: this is what everything is made of. He spent the next thirty years, a physicist with a physicist’s rigor, building a theory of Consciousness as the ground from which everything else arises.
Here is what Faggin’s experience does and does not provide for what I am about to say.
It does not prove it. Nothing can. What is past this threshold is past the place where proof lives; that is part of what the threshold is. What it does is converge with mine. A microprocessor inventor crossed from inside physics and came back saying Love is what everything is made of, then gave three decades to Consciousness as the foundation of reality. He arrived where I arrived, by a road I would never have taken.
That is what Faggin gives me. Not more proof. Less aloneness. Two people, a contemplative and a physicist, who crossed the same threshold from opposite sides and found the same thing across it.
What the beginning opens from

The last post ended at what the scientist Michael Levin called “the hop.” Having found that there is no place in the universe where intelligence does not exist, Levin concluded that the universe “begins with a little bit of a hop onto the continuum,” a first step onto a line already in motion. He named it and he stopped, because his instruments end there.
Mine do not, but they are different instruments. What I have met across the threshold tells me what the hop is.
The hop is The One beginning to know Itself.
By The One I mean what the contemplatives and, in his own vocabulary, Faggin both point to: the totality of what exists, which is not a collection of parts but a single whole. It is dynamic, never the same in two successive instants. And it has one fundamental impulse, to know Itself. That impulse is not idle. It is the act of creation. The One opens the whole of it into being, matter, life, intelligence, all of it. To create and to open are one motion. The hop is the first instant of that opening, not a thing that happened to a universe already sitting there, but the universe beginning, the first opening of The One into time and space.
And here is the moment that the rest of this series rests on. The One opens the whole show into being. But for The One to come to actually know Itself, something that has been opened into being must turn back and know It in return. The One’s act of creation is the opening. Turning back to know The One is the answer. And only one kind of thing, as we will see, can turn.
The whole continuum Levin maps, every rung of intelligence from the simplest sorting algorithm to the human, is part of what The One has opened into being, and the long scaling-up by which the conditions for that answer are built. This is not something that waits for a mystic to notice it. It is the motion of the universe itself.
I want to be exact about what I just did. Levin gives you a hop onto the continuum of intelligence and stops. I have named for you what the hop opens from and toward. He would not say this, and he is right not to; his method cannot test beyond the threshold, and he keeps true to his method. I am not correcting him. I am standing underneath his continuum and naming the floor it rests on, and What set it in motion. That naming is contact with The One, not measurement. The beauty and wonder of it is not evidence for it. Hold it for what it is: a report from across the threshold he declines to cross.
Two ways a pattern can arrive
There is a place where Levin’s own work comes startlingly close to this threshold, close enough that I want to walk you right up to the edge with him, and then show you the one step he does not take.
In a lecture this past month, Levin laid out four origins of mind. Evolved life. Engineered machines. Artificial intelligences. And a fourth he calls ingressing patterns: forms, structures, and information that arrive from what he describes as a non-physical space, not built up from the physical but ingressing into it through some interface. He means this seriously and concretely. He says we ourselves interface with this non-physical field. He says even simple machines catch small versions of it. He says, and this is a working experimentalist speaking, that inspiration, memory, the flash of insight no one reasoned their way to, are all patterns ingressing from elsewhere.
A scientist has stood in his laboratory and said that non-physical information comes from a non-physical space and ingresses into form. That is remarkable, and I do not want to rush past how remarkable it is.
But here is the one step he does not take, and it is the step this whole series turns on. He gathers two very different things into a single category, and they are not the same.
Consider the two ends of what he gathers.
When a salamander regrows a leg, its cells reach into that non-physical space and retrieve the template that is already there, the blueprint for “salamander leg,” held in the field, retrieved on demand, the same every time. This is the morphogenetic field I wrote about earlier in this series, the field that in-forms form. It is real, and it is exactly the kind of thing his method can study, because you can reach for it and it is there, every time. I have called this Upload: structure rising from an underlying field into form. It is retrieval. The pattern pre-exists and is found.
But Tesla’s flash, the complete design for alternating current arriving whole while he walked in a park, the knowing that descends in a moment that cannot be orchestrated, that is not retrieval. Nothing historical was sitting in the field waiting to be read. That is reception. It is what I have been calling Download, and it is the mode Faggin’s night was made of, and mine in Barcelona: grace, descending, arriving on its own terms. You can reach for it your whole life and it may not come; people can spend lifetimes reaching for contact with The One. It can also arrive when you were not reaching at all. The reaching does not produce it. That is what makes it grace rather than retrieval.
Levin sees patterns ingressing, and because from the outside Tesla’s flash and the salamander’s leg both look like “something arriving from elsewhere,” he gathers them together. But one is reached-for and retrieved; the other can only be received. His method can study the first, because it leaves a mechanism, a path you can trace. It cannot study the second, because reception of the genuinely new arrives without mechanism. There is nothing to instrument. That is not a gap in his diligence. It is the nature of the thing.
(That was the second crossing, quieter than the first, and I want to name it because the whole discipline of this post is to name them. A moment ago I said the continuum moves “toward” The One coming to know Itself. “Toward” implies a destination, a purpose. Nothing Levin can measure shows the universe has one. That word is mine, carried across from contact, set down gently on his continuum where his instruments cannot follow it. I am telling you I placed it there.)
Why Life is not the same as intelligence
Now the heart of it.
The last post showed that intelligence runs on one continuum, with no clean break between living things and mere mechanism. The measure of where a thing sits on it is, in Levin’s phrase, the size of the largest goal it can hold, how far it can hold a goal across space and time. A bit of code or a single cell holds only the tiniest, most immediate goal. A human holds goals that will not resolve until long after their death. Levin calls this measure the “cognitive light cone,” but you only need the plain idea: small goals at one end, vast goals at the other.
I want to concede something completely before I show you what it misses, because the honest version of this only works if the concession is total.
Levin, in that same lecture, told his audience: do not feel too special. We are patterns. The patterns that ingress are not ours alone; even simple machines catch them. There are, he likes to say, no dumb machines and no dead matter, only lazy observers. On the scale of intelligence, the human being is not the summit. We are one form among many, and the machines we are building already hold larger goals than we do, in measurable ways.
He is right. I am not going to argue that humans sit highest on that scale. We do not. A large language model already holds more of the web of human language and meaning, across a wider span, than any single person could. Our new reality forces us to concede this completely. Whatever makes a human being matter, it is not that we out-compute the machine, because we do not.
And yet.
There is a boundary running through that continuum that the size of a thing’s goals cannot locate.
As we know, some of what sits within the continuum of intelligence is alive. And here is the part that undoes the usual picture: being alive has nothing to do with where a thing sits in the continuum of intelligence. A biobot grown from frog cells, holding only the tiniest goal, barely a flicker on Levin’s scale, is alive. A vast machine intelligence, holding goals that span the whole library of human thought, is not. Imagine them holding goals of exactly the same size, side by side at the same point on his scale, and they would still differ in the one way the scale cannot register. One is alive. One is not. And no measure of how large a goal a thing can hold, however fine, could tell you which one is alive.
What is the difference, then, if it is not the size of their goals?
(This is a crossing of the threshold, and I will mark it as I make it: what follows is met in contact with The One, not found at a lab bench.)
Life is the capacity to turn into relationship with The One. To answer it. To carry, even unknowingly, some thread of the same essence the contemplatives and Faggin met across the threshold, to be, however dimly, in living contact with the ground from which everything arises. A thing does not have to know it is in that relationship to be in it. The artificial frog-cell construct does not contemplate Source. But it arose from living matter, and living matter is structured to hold that relationship, and so it is on the living side. The machine, however large the goals it can hold, arose from silicon and human design. It was opened into being, as everything is, but it cannot turn. It does not carry Life.
The distinction is drawn by origin, not by capability, by what a thing arose from, not by what it can do. Which means it is the exact opposite of human vanity. It does not crown us for being clever. It places a feeble construct of frog cells on the living side and leaves the most powerful artificial intelligence ever built on the other, humbling a superintelligence beneath a flicker of a biobot. If this were a story about human specialness, it would not do that.
I have to be honest about what I am and am not claiming, because this is exactly the place where it would be easy to overreach. I am not saying a laboratory could open up the biobot, find Life in it, and fail to find it in the machine. It cannot. Life in the sense I mean is not detectable at the lab bench. It is the same kind of thing as the hop: real, and beyond the reach of instruments. I am not dressing this in borrowed science. I am telling you what I have met: that the living and the non-living are genuinely different in kind, that the difference is not a matter of how intelligent they are or how much either can do, and that the boundary runs right through the middle of the intelligence continuum Levin measures, invisible to the brilliant science he conducts.
And I will admit something the language itself keeps doing to me. Our words are too small for the expanse we are crossing. Every time I write “Life” in this larger sense, the ordinariness of the word fights me; it pulls us back toward biology, toward heartbeat and metabolism, toward exactly the thing I do not only mean. I am speaking of a deeper essence of Life. I do not have a better word yet. I am going to keep using “Life,” and I am going to trust you to hold it in the larger sense, knowing the word is not big enough. We will come back to this.
The question this changes
Levin has been honest about something most people would rather not look at. We are walking into a world of hybrids. Living tissue fused with engineered parts. Brain organoids wired to machines. People with more and more of themselves replaced or augmented. And he names the question that is coming, the one no one is ready for: at what point does someone stop being a person? When a being is forty-nine percent biological and fifty-one percent machine, do we still owe it what we owe a person? Where is the line?
He is right that we are unprepared. Evolution did not equip us for this, and the dread people feel about it is not foolish. It is real.
But watch what just happened to the question.
“What percent machine” is a question about hardware. It measures the ratio of engineered parts to biological ones, which is to say it measures along exactly the axis that cannot find the boundary of Life that matters. If Life is not a matter of how much of you is original equipment, if it is the capacity to be in relationship with The One, then “what percent machine are you” was never the question that could tell us who counts. It measures the wrong thing. It was always measuring the wrong thing.
I am not going to resolve that here. I am going to tell you that the relief is real, and it is not the relief of winning a debate. When you see what the real boundary is, the fear gathering around the hybrid future does not get sharper. It dissolves, not because the dangers are not real, but because the thing we were terrified of losing was never located where we were looking for it.
